Emotions in science
From the highs of obtaining ground breaking data, being published in top journals, getting a grant, a tenure-track job… to the lows of not understanding the data, having a grant or paper rejected, not to mention the high stress inherent to the publish-or-perish academic system, the work of a scientist is a real emotional rollercoaster. And yet, the output of this work is stripped of any emotions. The published facts are rational, evidence leave no space for subjective interpretation. How do scientists cope with this paradox? Are scientific papers truly devoid of subjectivity? Dr Samuel Lagier takes a step back from the bench to analyse the human element of science, with the emotionality that comes with it.
